Tagged Bags of Grass and Leaves Will Be Picked Up On Fridays of Each Week From Now On. Residents Will Need Call Into The Transfer Station To Be Picked Up - Prior To Each Friday.

Where do I call if I have questions about recycling, garbage, pick-up days or related items?

Residents are provided a 64 gallon gray cart for normal household waste. Extra garbage must be taken to the transfer station. Residents are provided one 96 gallon blue cart for recycling.

Garbage pick up dates are Monday-North of West 4th Street & West of Grand Avenue;Tuesday-North of East 4th Street & East of Grand Avenue; Wednesday-South of East & West 4th Street.

Recycling is picked up on Thursday, alternating between East of Grand Avenue and West of Grand Avenue. See Schedule.

What days will they pick up grass, leaves, brush, and tires?

City wide: Friday

How about yard waste?

Grass and Leaves: These require a $.75 sticker on each bag to be picked up. Place sticker in a visible spot for driver to see.

Brush: Must be bundled no larger than 2' around and cut In 4' lengths. Each bundle requires a $.75 sticker on it to be picked up.

Stickers can be purchased at City Hall, Hy-Vee, or Spencer Municipal Utilities for $.75 each.

Where can I haul yard waste myself?

Yard waste may be taken to the grass and leaf site located north of West 18th Street at 18th Avenue West. This site is only for yard waste generated in the city of Spencer.

What do I do with appliances?

(Ovens, stoves, ranges, dishwashers, clothes washers, clothes dryers, furnaces, air conditioners, hot water heaters, freezers, microwaves, ice machines, dehumidifiers and refrigerators)

Call (712) 580-7270 to get on the pick-up list. EACH WHITE GOOD REQUIRES A $20 STICKER.

White goods delivered to the transfer station require a $15.00 fee at the gate.

Where can I purchase stickers for white goods to be picked up?

Stickers can be purchased at City Hall for $20.00 each. You must call to schedule a pickup date.

What is E-waste?

Basically anything that runs on electricity or batteries, blenders, hair dryers, etc.

What do I do with E-waste

E-waste may be taken to the transfer station, call 580-7270 if you have questions.

What do I do with furniture?

Stuffed chairs, couches, mattresses, and TVs require a $12.00 sticker for curbside pickup. Call (712) 580-7270 to get on the pick up list. $12.00 stickers may be purchased at City Hall.

Stuffed chairs, couches, mattresses, and TVs delivered to the transfer station require $7.00 fee at the gate.

What do I do with carpet?

Please call (712) 580-7270 to get on the pick-up list. Carpet can be no longer than 4' in length and bundled so one person can pick up and handle.

What about tires, batteries, oil and paint?

$5.00 Per Small Truck/17.5-19.5" Tire
$9.00 Per Large Truck Tire
$35.00 Per ExLarge Tires
$2.00 Extra charge for tires with rims.

Paint:
Empty paint cans may be disposed of with regular garbage as long as the lid is removed and the paint has been allowed to dry out.

Rate reduction consideration

Effective July 1, 1992, low to moderate income families may apply in November at City Hall for a rate reduction consideration. If you qualify, the reduction would be rebated In December of each year.

What about medical wastes?

Medical wastes are NOT recyclable and should not be disposed of in garbage, either. This includes infectious wastes, needles, syringes, scalpels, urine sample bottles, donated blood bottles & needles. Free sharps containers may be obtained from City Hall by Spencer residents. These are for our worker's safety.

Monday through Saturday: 7:30 am to 5:00 pm

Can I drop off garbage at the Transfer Station?

Yes

When do I set out my garbage and recycling?

City Ord. 4-5-6A: "No Permanent Solid Waste Container Shall Be Kept or Maintained in a Front Yard Except For Collection -- Residential Solid Waste Receptacles or Containers Shall NOT Be Placed at the Curb More Than 12 Hours Before the Scheduled Time of Collection and Shall Be Removed from the Curb Area Within 8 Hours After Collection."
